Coffee is a priority product under the EU-EAC Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP) in all five East African Community Partner States involved in this programme. Their combined coffee exports to the world amount to about 1 billion USD per year. MARKUP interventions in the coffee sector focus on identifying gaps in standards for coffee and overcome the barriers preventing exports to external markets, developing new EAC standards for coffee products, training of SMEs in coffee tasting, assessment protocols and grading, market exposure, finance boot camps for SMEs to equip them with the skills to attract loans and effectively manage funds.
